About

Breaking News AI starts with an overview of AI concepts and applications.  As a group, participants receive targeted video training on selected AI applications. Participants divide into teams and take on the role of an independent news organisation that must produce a "breaking news" broadcast.  They assess their current level of AI skills and knowledge. Each team member chooses an area of focus, such as script writing, research, image/video generation, voice synthesis, editing and producing.  Each role requires specialist knowledge and skills in utilising specific AI tools. 

Teams work on their "breaking news "segment using the provided brief and template.  Each team is provided access to the necessary resources and AI tools. On completion, each team's broadcast is presented to the group. After each presentation, teams can discuss the AI tools they used and any challenges they faced if time permits.

A debrief and reflection session can be held to promote continuous learning and adaptation. Participants discuss what they learned about AI, reflecting on the challenges and successes of their projects.

Learning Outcomes

Breaking News AI equips participants with valuable skills in AI and a practical, fun and engaging application that promotes collaboration, creativity and teamwork.  Through education and open communication, this activity can overcome fears about AI in the workplace and promote continuous learning and adaptation. This activity can be used to emphasize that AI is meant to assist rather than replace humans, highlighting how it can augment their skills and enable them to focus on more strategic tasks. Participants can be invited to recognize where AI could positively impact workflow or productivity, reinforcing its value in the workplace. If required, it creates an opportunity to discuss ethical considerations and how the organization plans to handle them, ensuring that staff feel their values are respected. Creating a supportive environment and emphasizing collaboration can help staff feel more at ease with AI in the workplace.
